Dimension

Chart overview

36 columns x 32 rows ~ 23 x 22cm

I used a 4mm hook and medium-weight acrylic yarn. Your tapestry size will vary depending on your gauge.

Materials

- Medium-weight acrylic yarn in Orange, White, Black, Blue

- 4mm hook

- 6mm diameter dowel

Abbreviations

- sc = Single crochet

- ch = Chain

- st = stitch

- sts = stitches

- RS = Right side

- WS = wrong side

- o = Orange, w = White, b = Black, n = Navy

General guides!

Each square in the chart represents 1 sc

- Before turning your work at the end of each row, do not ch 1. Turn your work and sc right into the first st to start a new row to have straighter edges

- You can carry the unused yarn every st or to the st where the color is needed only

- This pattern requires intarsia crochet. If you're unfamiliar with this technique, look it up before starting!

- The pattern is intentionally written upside down to avoid color changes in the first row

2. Making the border

Once you’ve finished your last row, switch to navy yarn, turn your work. Sc 1, ch 1, skip 1 st, repeat until you reach the corner.

When you reach the corner, (sc 1, ch 2, sc 1) all in the last st of that side. Keep following the same pattern to all 4 sides and 3 corners.

For the last corner, ch 2 and slip stitch into the first st of the border. Fasten off.

If your border is curving and pulling in, you need to add more stitches per side (or try going up a hook size). If your borders are wavy or ruffling up, then you are placing too many stitches per side.

3. Adding the mouth

The mouth is not made using sc, I chose to surface crochet with black yarn to add it. Please refer to the grid chart above to see its placement.

4. Attaching the dowel

On the wrong side of your work, attach yarn in the upper corner stitch. Place the dowel between your hook and your yarn, slip stitch to attach the dowel to your piece. Sc into each stitch along the side.

You could simply imagine you're carrying the unused yarn. But instead of a strand of yarn, it is a dowel :)

Fasten off, leave a long tail for the hanging strand. Tie the yarn tail to the other end of the dowel.
